It is also regarded as the oldest breed of chicken in America and probably descended from chickens brought in during the colonial era.

The main reasons for this chickens breed popularity was the chooks possess a very hardy constitution along with their heavy plumage giving them excellent protection during bad winters. This breed weighs in on average at 7lb at maturity.

The barred feathering also gives them excellent camouflage when foraging in shady areas, making them practically invisible from predators. (more…)
