Dorking Chickens Are Possibly The Oldest British Chicken Breed.

dorking chicken pictureDorkings were brought from Italy to Britain during the time of the Roman Invasion in AD43, making them one of the oldest breeds in the UK.

Dorkings are a dual purpose largish bird. Cocks weigh about 9 ponds and the hens 7 lbs.

Colours range from silver-grey, red, white, dark and cuckoo. It is interesting to note that the colours also dictate the comb type of the Dorking. The silver-grey and red varieties should possess a single comb, whilst the white and cuckoo should have a rose comb. (more…)

These chickens are an ideal beginners bird. They originate from a port in Italy called (you guessed it!) Ancona. They were shipped to the UK in the mid 19th century and a few years later it was exported to other countries including the USA.

They were first thought to be a member of the Leghorn family, particularly from the Mottled Leghorn, but this is now known to be untrue. (more…)
